Civil Engineering Students Take a Trip to the Freedom Tower

Civil Engineering students had the chance to tour the World Trade Center site and various other construction works underway in Lower Manhattan. They were invited to attend “The Moles Annual Students Day” by an organization called “The Moles” which is a fraternal organization of the heavy construction industry. Moles members are leaders in their profession who are dedicated to promoting the industry and supporting their colleagues through outreach programs and networking opportunities.

After a breakfast and a briefing of the project and the construction activities to be seen, all students were provided with hard hats, goggles, safety vests and then embarked on a site tour escorted by members of The Moles.

The Freedom Tower will stand at 1776 foot high and will be among the tallest buildings in the world and the tallest in the United States. It will be ready for occupancy by 2013. Three other high-rise office buildings are planned for the site along Greenwich Street, and they will surround the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, which is under construction. The area will also be home to a museum of the site’s history.

At the end of the construction site tour, the students returned to the briefing point, on the 49th floor of the new 7 World Trade Center to enjoy lunch. Although it was a cloudy day, the students that went on the trip said they had a great time, took a lot of pictures, and could not wait to see the completed project.
