Civil Engineering Students Carry The Load

A team of civil engineering students from TCNJ placed fourth overall in the 2009 Metropolitan Regional Steel-Bridge Competition, held recently at the NYU Polytechnic, in Brooklyn. TCNJ Steel Bridge Team also received second-place awards in the categories of structural efficiency, and display (aesthetic). The TCNJ students were ahead of teams from Copper Union, Columbia University, Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, New York City College of Technology, Rutgers University, and Stevens Institute of Technology.

The annual steel bridge competition is organized, and judged by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), along with the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). It fosters excellence in the civil engineering programs. Each team of civil engineering students was given the task of designing, fabricating, and constructing a 1:10 scale model of a steel bridge.

The TCNJ Steel Bridge Team members, who belong to the ASCE student chapter, are Michael Deluca, Ryan Devine, Emmanuel Stuppard, Jeremy Williams, and team captain Marc Preim. They have worked together to achieve optimum design and to become extremely familiar with the construction procedure and the scoring matrix of the competition. In addition TCNJ Steel Bridge Team members placed second in the professional Mead Paper competition. This year’s topic was “Sustainability and Civil Engineering.” The team technical paper was prepared by Jeremy Williams and presented by Ryan Devine.
