Nathan Knauss Becomes Senior Mentor for FIRST

Recent College of New Jersey Graduate Nathan “Nate” Knauss has been recognized by FIRST as a Senior Mentor to the New Jersey Area. FIRST is an organization dedicated to “inspiring future scientists and designers with real world challenges using math and science.” Knauss has been involved with FIRST since his sophomore year of high school after a friend suggested he attend one of their kickoff events.

After coming to the College of New Jersey he realized that “he could help inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)” and decided to pursue a career in technology education. Knauss is currently a Technology Education Teacher at Cherokee High School where he teaches courses in electronics, design, problem solving, and communication technologies.

As a senior mentor, he has to devote 10- 15 hours a week recruiting and supporting FIRST Team Mentors and Event Volunteers but he also hopes to use this time “to assist with the creation of FIRST programs in places like Southern New Jersey where the organization has been virtually non-existent.”

Knauss stated “I view the role as one where I can have some fun strengthening and supporting teams in a program I’ve always felt was very valuable.”
